1938 ULH Harley Davidson

1938 ULH Harley Davidson Project

Checking the frame using the procedure described in the manual.

The project is once again in progress as of 4/21/09!!! Last year as I noted on the website, Uncle Sam pretty much put a stop to the project because of the amount of taxes I owed ... I really didn't feel like I made any money but as a good buddy once stated "if you're not eating bologna yet you're doing ok". Looking back I wasn't eating bologna!

To finance this project, I turned to my storage unit and my past 30 years of involvement with old VW Bugs. I was in the process of building a very nice '64 Bug and had accumulated a lot of very expensive parts. I decided that the '38ULH HD was much more important to finish so the bug parts when up for sell. I accumulated about $6500 so far from the parts and decided that now is the time to get going.

I contacted Tom Martins at CycleWorksUSA in Littleton, CO, for help. This frame that I thought had a "slight" bend in the left down tune turned out to be in serious need of straightening! The neck which comes from the factory with a 28? rake was off by 4.7?. The neck was also twisted clockwise from the rider's perspective. Also there were bends in the two bottom tube below the engine mounts. Tony did a great job and check out the pictures of the frame straightening process above.

The engine case and tranny case need some attention too so I first contacted Dan and then Phil at Advanced Cycle Machining in Superior, Wisconsin. There were a few years in the 1930's that Harley made engine cases that had a plate as part of the bearing casting on both side (text not complete).

This is a Ian Korianski's bike that I did a lot of modification to starting back last fall and pretty much completing it in July. We're still finishing a few minor issues but he is out riding "her". I will follow up later with text about what was done to the bike, but for now here's some picture.
